A couple of you responded to my last post and suggested setting more boundaries with work. In response Dan and I thought back to conversations in Princeton. We knew how hard it would be to make friends right away and thought that joining a running group would help. Hamilton does not have a running group, or, I think, runners. Truly, I have not met one person who runs. A couple of days ago Dan and I were out on a walk and saw two runners. We had the instant urge to chase them and beg them to be our friends (which we resisted - we thought that might be a little freaky...). Rather, we began to research nearby groups of runners.
Mid-week we found a group which meets in a suburban, new development-type area about 20 minutes away on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. Perhaps you are doing the math right now, and realizing if we have a 20 min. drive, we had to leave our apt. at 7:10, which means we had to wake up around 6:30. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
It was awesome! There were people running 6 miles, 11 miles, and 18-22 miles all at different paces. We started as a big group just as the sun was rising and began to split up as our courses branched. These people were young, active, healthy and the best part is none of them are from Hamilton or related to people from Hamilton! We are definitely going to become regulars. Thanks to those of you whose helpful comments and empathy helped spur us on to action!
